Time frame: After Dragnea.
---
Sierra Nark stirred from her troubled slumber. The young man’s final message resonated in her mind as she floated towards consciousness.
“…Meet by the Propella tree.”
Her eyes opened. She felt disoriented from the sudden return of mana, but she sensed familiarity in her location. Scenes of battle wavered across her vision. Hazy figures were clashing in a battle. And then, a thought.
She’s in trouble… Tsuba—
“We’ll be waiting for you… Sierra.”
Someone else’s invasive thought. Like the young man from before, this new person was also eerily familiar to her. She could feel the longing in the person’s tone as the message brushed against her soul sphere. Knock, knock.
She opened the door.
In a flash of teal light, Sierra flew like a shooting star away from Dragnea. She had an inexplicable feeling that this person meant a great deal to her.
---
In Central Orlania, there was a majestic luminescent tree that stood several hundred meters tall. Many years ago, the area had been thriving with wildlife, but then the humans took over as soon as Propella became harvestable. Now, signs of human habitation dotted the landscape, like a contamination.
Sierra drifted along one of the five streams that ran thick with the Propella tree’s liquid. It was a curse and a blessing to all magical beings. Too little, and the spirits would perish. Too much, and eventually they would go berserk before destroying themselves and everything around them.
As she traveled, she struggled to find a hold in the Earthly realm. The Spiritual realm lay parallel to the Earthly realm, but it was very difficult to travel between the two without finding the proper connection. For Sierra, it was the water.
She reached out and pushed against an invisible barrier. It was like trying to reach into a mirror—one that kept fogging up. You had to keep wiping and wiping until—
“Ahhh!!” Sierra yelped in fear as two arms reached through and pulled her into the barrier.
She landed in the river with a less-than-graceful splash and gasped. The cool, mana-laced water sent a shock through her systems, which had been dulled by her prolonged stay in the Spiritual realm. As a spirit, she had no physical body, but her magical one reacted with her element, as well as other types of magic.
To have been able to touch her... the ones who had pulled her through must have been spirits as well.
Sierra let the mana from the river energize her for a second, and then emerged from below the surface with several dozen lances of ice trained on two very surprised male spirits.
“Whoa, Sierra!” One of them yelled, placing both hands forward, palms up.
At the same time, the other stomped his foot hard on the ground. Several gigantic clumps of earth detached themselves from the ground and flew towards Sierra. They smashed straight through the ice lances, shattering them like glass puppets, and knocked the undine clean out of the water. She landed on the opposite bank with a ground-shaking thump.
It hurt to be cautious sometimes.
“Mmph…” Sierra let out a muffled groan from under a mound of earth. It was heavy, and spiked with mana, so she couldn’t float through.
On the other side of the river, the two spirits started arguing with one another.
“Why the f--- did you do that?”
“Conditioned reflex. And don’t use that word—it makes you sound like an idiot.”
“Do you think I care about that right now? Ugh, you douche bag. Come on, let that mountain off of her. Seriously, this guy…”
The load on top of her suddenly lightened considerably. Someone lifted her gently into a comfortable sitting position and a gentle wind blew bits of residue off of her.
Once her vision had cleared, she was able to examine the two spirits that she had just attempted to incapacitate. She recognized the one who had surrendered. Air… the young man who had prevented her from disappearing at Dragnea. Like before, green mana wafted around his tall and lanky form. His similarly colored long hair was pulled away from his face to reveal smooth, androgynous features, and hypnotic silver eyes. He was the one who was helping her up at the moment.
The other spirit was also a young man, similar in age, but completely different in disposition. Earth—as in down-to-earth, don’t-mess-with-me-or-I’ll-mess-with-you. He was surrounded in a brilliant copper aura, with short unkempt hair, angular features, and a noble chin. In contrast to the air spirit, who looked tall and healthy, he was a bit shorter, thinner, and perhaps bookish.
Earth was currently standing a little off to the side, brow furrowed, looking concerned. He noted her scrutiny and quickly dropped his gaze. Beautiful emerald eyes…
“Are you alright, Sierra?” The air spirit asked.
“Yes, I’m perfectly fine now, thank you.” She replied, tipping her head in gratitude.
He grinned widely in response. “I was hoping that we would meet under better conditions, but, some idiot had to go and—” (The earth spirit flinched.) “—Oh, but that is a thing of the past.” He flicked his wrist, as if swatting away a bad memory. Sierra smiled at his gesticulation.
“My name is Lucifer—Luke for short. That idio—I mean, the earth elemental who just assaulted you is Davos.”
“There is no need for reiteration—I already understand. I’m sorry.” Davos growled.
“Say it to her, not me… idiot.”
The earth spirit flushed, and knelt down to Sierra’s eye-level. “I apologize for causing you pain.”
Sierra barely heard the apology. “I forgive you,” she answered absently, her thoughts jumping to a distant time.
“After all that fighting, my friends, Davos, Luke, and Sierra, were the only strong ones left who could perform the ritual. Only they knew that the ritual would end in their deaths.”
An awkward moment of silence followed, during which Luke and Davos shifted uncomfortably, like children under their teacher’s watchful eye.
“You called me here for a reason. May I know of it?” Sierra finally asked, unfolding her legs to stand up. The two men followed her movement hastily, almost tripped over one another.
“You met her, didn’t you?” She questioned once more, fighting to control her composure. And then, a thought occurred to her both terrifying and heartening. “How much do you know?”
Vague as these questions were, Luke and Davos both knew what she was talking about, and backed away from the intensity of her aura.
“You first, Dav.” Luke said, nudging his companion on the ribs.
“No, please, I insist.” Davos responded with pat on the back.
“Dav…”
“Ladies first.” The earth spirit intoned, stone-faced.
“Oh shut up!”
They both glanced at Sierra with uncertainty, and were surprised to find that she was no longer frowning.
“My fault,” She said, seeing their expressions. “I was…distracted. Forgive me.”
“No, it’s fi—” The two spirits started simultaneously, and then glared at each other. The undine smiled.
“We just wanted to see you,” Luke said finally. “We saw you in her memories. Mana’s…”
As I thought.
“Lu peered into her memories without her permission, and she almost killed him.” Davos informed with a teasing grin.
“A spirit gets bored after being around for several centuries.” Luke shot back, annoyed.
Another awkward silence followed, which Sierra broke.
“Tell me more. I want to know who I was before. You know everything, don’t you?”
“Yeah…” Luke said slowly, shuddering at an apparently frightening memory.
“Mana was rather terrifying when she found out that Lu peeked.” Davos notified again.
“E-enough about that,” Luke cut in loudly, “Sierra, I’ll show yo—”
Davos, suddenly with a serious expression, placed a restrictive arm between Luke and Sierra and locked eyeballs with the former. “Let me.”
Sierra followed their exchange curiously.
Luke backed down reluctantly—he must have sensed Davos’s murderous aura—and Davos approached Sierra. “Ready?”
The undine nodded eagerly and stepped into the earth spirit’s open arms. He placed his hands behind her head and pressed his forehead to her’s. In the second before the images overwhelmed her, she flushed and thought, What a familiar feeling.
---
Davos. Kidnapped. He is the son of an illustrious magician after all.
“Impossible.”
“We have to save him!”
“Let’s sneak into the Magic world.”
“Hey, it’s me, Koji, nice to finally meet you.”
“We should find out more at the Majere Estate.”
“Who are you? Outsiders? We don’t take kindly to intruders.”
“Wait, please! We just want to bring Davos back!”
“Lu, Let’s try listening.”
“This is Lucifer. I’m Thalia, Lu’s fiancé!”
“How romantic, hahaha.”
“…”
“Sierra, right?”
“Hello, Thalia.”
“Why are you and Mana trying so hard to get Dav back by yourselves? You should just wait for the authorities to…”
“He’s our friend, and my… Ah… Well, to do any less would be betraying him.”
“Sometimes, it feels like this war is too big for us to handle. Why Davos?”
“It’s not like you to give up, Sierra!”
“Mana…”
“You should believe in the power of love—Ouch!”
“One incident has been resolved. We should seal the boundaries between the worlds for good.”
“The three of them should do nicely as sacrifices.”
“Sierra! Luke! Davos! Where are you?”
“…Mana…?”
“Sierra, what are you doing? Get away from there!”
“No, Mana. This is for everyone…”
“But what about me…?”
“Interesting. Perhaps I shall make you an immortal so you can retell the tale of this tragedy.”
“Don’t be stupid. I wouldn’t want that kind of life.”
“Unfortunately, you are in no position to oppose me.”
“There are many worlds out there. Maybe your friends are on one of them. I’ll help you find them, if you do something for me in return…”
“What’s with higher beings and always being holier-than-thou…”
“Perhaps you should start at the worlds that have unstable boundaries. They might have been pulled there in order to regulate it.”
“Let’s go then.”
---
When Sierra’s eyes opened again, she found that she was gasping for breath. She was slumped against Davos, her limbs unable to support her.
“What—what—”
“Sierra, calm down. Calm down, calm down.” Davos spoke soothingly into her ear. She relaxed.
“Are you okay, Sierra?” Luke was leaning over to inspect her.
“Yes—yes. I’m fine.” She gasped again. Then she sprang back with a squeak. She just realized that she had been clinging incredibly closely to Davos.
Back then, we were like that… Sierra recalled, her mana circulation quickening.
“Such children.” Luke mocked, sounding a bit like his former self.
“How funny, Lu. You used to be such a strait-laced bookworm. What brought about the change, Mr. Playboy?” Davos sneered.
“Oh, you’re not so innocent yourself, Mr. Popular.” Lu retorted, shooting a tunnel of air at a patch of tall grass behind him. Several female grass nymphs, who were concurrently ogling Davos and glaring at Sierra, squealed and fled the scene.
“I don’t go actively chasing after air sprites, you know.”
“Enough. For centuries-old spirits, you’re not being very mature.” Sierra interrupted, hands on her hips.
“She hasn’t changed at all.” Lu and Dav announced at the same time.
“Don’t change the subject!”
The two men started laughing, and Sierra eventually joined in.
---
“So… what now?” Luke asked absently.
The three of them were lying on the grass, staring at the sky, enjoying each others’ company, and thinking about their shared past.
“I have to go back.” Sierra murmured. Beside her, Davos shot up. His face flashed before her, framed by the blue sky.
“Are you sure? Can’t you stay?” He pleaded.
“I feel like a third wheel,” Luke grumbled, but turned the other way.
“When I created my human form, I made a choice to become stronger, so I could help the people here,” Sierra said softly.
“But—”
The undine poked his forehead. “There will be plenty of time afterward to catch up.”
“If that’s what you want, then… I’ll follow you as a human too!” Davos declared.
“I grow tired of your juvenile banter, Davos Majere.” It was Luke, but not quite… It was Lucifer.
The earth spirit froze at the memory and Sierra’s eyes widened. The Lu back then had been a well-read and powerful sorcerer. A very frightening one.
“Sierra’s ability to create a moving human form is the earth’s way of balancing our magic. She was bound to a landlocked sea, with immense power surges during the full moon—enough to create a moving vessel if she wanted to. You, Davos—your magic is more powerful than mine because you are bound to the earth, whereas I can fly wherever I wish. However, you will never have enough for a human vessel, since you can also move more freely. Such is the balance of our magic.” Luke took a deep breath. Davos sighed in resignation. Sierra jumped as Davos’s fingers twined with her’s.
“I can still look after you. I’m strong enough to do that, even if I’m not a human,” the earth spirit promised.
“Mm,” Sierra nodded in assent. She would never know how it was possible for love to transcend lifetimes. She still remembered that feeling, and Davos did too.
“I should go,” Sierra said, but clenched Davos’s hand tighter. He met her gaze longingly. It would be so easy say no... to forget about the Round Table. She closed her eyes and looked away from Davos. His fingers loosened their grip and they separated.
“Before you start gathering up the spare mana from your previous vessel, I have a proposition,” Luke spoke up suddenly. “Let us contribute our magic. I noticed that your previous body was rather lacking in emotions. And other places,” he coughed.
Davos glowered at Lu, who had reverted back to his lighthearted air spirit self.
“It will make your new vessel more powerful.”
Sierra smiled gratefully at Luke, “Thank you, Luke.” Davos cleared his throat. “And… Davos.” She added shyly.
The three spirits joined hands, and released the seals on their magic, so that blue, green, and copper lights bathed the landscape by the Propella tree.
“Make clothes,” The earth spirit reminded sternly before they began.
“Yes, of course. What do you take me for?” Luke asked with a hurt expression.
“Exactly what you are,” Davos replied mercilessly. Sierra giggled.
The wave of lights intensified, until blue eventually pierced through in a blinding flash.
“We’ll always be watching your back, so don’t worry too much,” Luke’s voice echoed.
“Sierra... I lo - I love you.” Davos.
The undine sighed wistfully, and the blue light winked out.

In the Machigai Teahouse, a beautiful young lady with light brown hair materialized in the middle of the room. Unconscious.
“What th—” The blue-haired shop-keeper began, but then rushed to catch her before she fell on her head.
“Isn’t this… Sierra?”
