Kane had tried exceedingly hard to stay calm during the train ride, and so once off the train and at New Manhattan, he was bristling with energy and ready for battle, or work.
Heading towards the CoG HQ, he took in his surroundings.
A desolate wasteland that reeks of death and dangerous radiation, perfect.
Stopping at the entrance, he announced himself.
"Second Sergeant Kane Xenophobius of the Xenophius Empire, at your service!"

Kane got tired of waiting.
He was tired of having to wait for hours on end, merely for some mission of little value.
He stomped off, away from the Headquarters.
They want cleanup, eh? Then it's a cleanup they'll have.
Wading into the rubble of a collapsed building, Kane began stacking piles of bricks and mortar, turning what was once practically a sea of rubbish into neatly constructed shapes that would be easy for collection by machines.
Moving on, he spotted something glinting in the ground.
Intruiged, he dug it out and found that it was merely an old rifle.
"Maybe they'll pay me for salvage?", he wondered to himself.
As he explored the area, he collected salvageable items with one hand while clearing up rubble with the other.

Hmm... So that must be the help that we're getting...
She thought to herself as she was patrolling the skies when she saw the humongous character on the ground, picking up and stacking up piles of rubble and salvaging weapons.
Landing down gently beside him, she initiated a conversation:
"Hello there. I assume that you are the help that we asked for? And I apologise for not having anyone to attend to you, we are kind of short on manpower here."
She stepped back a little, worried that his huge arms may just hit her when he turned around, and she placed both of her hands, with her staff behind her.

Kane put down the last piece of mortar before straightening up and turning around.
Great, yet another tiny girl.
He knew that females were just as worthy as males, indeed, his cousin had been a Battle Sister, the female equivalent of the Space Marines. But this plane of existence seemed to have far too many adolescents who could fly.
"Indeed, small one. I was recommended here and since nobody has given me any specific instructions, I have taken it upon myself to do some salvage and cleanup work."
He glanced at his armful of salvaged weapons and other items.
"You seem to have some special powers, just like all the others have. Perhaps if you will, help me bring these salvaged items back to the base."
He put the items down at her feet before moving on to the next pile of rubble.
The Emperor does not dabble in much niceties, and so neither shall I.

CoG NM Recon - SaS Unit 0309
The LRV/T-01 Scorpion rumbled as its tracks scrambled for purchase on the pulverised concrete ground, the carbon-rhodium steel wheels that formed the front axle crushing large chunks of rock for the tracks to grip on. The Scorpion's Gauss rifle had been removed, the top converted into a large flatbed for transporting salvaged equipment.
The extremely inefficient and understaffed Recon HQ had been busy with a long chain of interviewees for various jobs.
It was not often you got someone who completely fitted the job, but no one had managed to get through the huge amounts of red tape before the person stormed off.
Luckily, they had tracked him down. The Scorpion stopped metres away from the four-metre-tall walking tank, and the man inside stood up.
"Kane Xenophobius? We're the men from CoG Recon assigned to inform you that your application's been accepted. Your first mission is waiting. Please come with us."
The man who had stood up motioned somewhere ahead, to a small building that was sitting in the middle of a large cleared field.
"The salvage and cleanup operation, we will provide you with ample repayment for services rendered."
The man spotted the floating girl, and gave a bemused smile.
"I see you've met our aide from the Time-Space Administration Bureau. For some reason they got all wrapped up in this nuclear mess. Well, doesn't matter. Please come with us, Kane."

Yet another voice interrupted him.
Turning around once again, this time it was a man in a vehicle that looked like it was used for ferrying materials round in the fetid wasteland.
"You do look like you are short of manpower."
He picked up the items he had dumped at the girl's feet and loaded them onto the flatbed, then walked next to it, towering over it.
"Proceed."
One step closer to redemption...

Lady in white[/u]
Hmm... Seems like he behaves just like how he looks... Quite cold indeed... Its ok, as long as he does his job well.
"Ah, hello there. Keep up the good work."
She gave a cheery smile and a thumbs up to the man from the Scorpion. She then hovered beside the Scorpion, as the man lead the way to the site where Kane would be working at.

CoG NM Recon - SaS Unit 0309
The Scorpion chugged ahead, its engines whining in reminiscence of a history far more glorious than its current role of salvage operator.
It stopped next to a small, cordoned-off half-destroyed building in the middle of nowhere. The signs "DANGER" and "KEEP OUT" and "STAY OUT UNLESS YOU'RE A SPACE MARINE" were littered liberally around the area.
"This is a very radiation-heavy spot." The man pointed toward a nearby portable Geiger counter, which was currently spiking off the charts. A wire ran along inside the disused building.
"We've sent in a few men in heavy anti-radiation suits before, but apparently there's something in there that prevents them from getting further. We need you to do the investigation, since this probably involves shifting several tons of displaced rock without aid of equipment."
The man scratched his head.
"Well, you could have a shovel if you like."

She giggled a little as the man offered Kane a shovel.
"I guess he won't be needing it."
She smiled at the man who tried to make things better for Kane.
"He'll be fine with just the armour he is in... Right Kane? Also, I'll use my Area Search to aid you during your investigation, if there is anything wrong, I'll help you from afar. Just like almost everyone here, I'm a human too. I can't get close to the radiation."
She explained to Kane as she gently raised her left hand in front of her chest and pointed her index finger up to the sky. From the tip of it, magical energy materialised into a small pink orb. It steadily grew bigger to the size of a softball and hovered on the spot even when she lowered her hand.
"This would allow me to communicate with you and see what is going on around you."
She smiled at Kane as the pink magical orb hovered to Kane, stopping at about 30 centimeters from Kane's right shoulder.

They reached a building that looked like any other, but Kane's HUD showed a slightly higher amount of radiation in this sector.
Dismounting from the tank, the man offered him a shovel. Kane, naturally, declined his offer.
"The Emperor has deemed that my armor is enough for this mission, and so I will accept no other implements."
He watched as the little girl created a pink orb and explained it's usage. Watching it bob up and down over his shoulder, he nodded at her and proceeded deeper into the structure.
The radiation counter climbed higher, but was still far from his maximum level of tolerance.
I will break down any rock, crush any obstacle, accomplish any mission. For the Emperor!

Seeing that Kane has entered the building, she looked at the skies and gained in altitude, still nearby the building.
"Long-range mode"
She said softly, and her staff changed its form. The 3/4 golden circle over the red orb had changed into a pointy U-shaped head, with the tails pointing outwards and one tail being longer than the other.
"Hi Kane, can you hear me? I'm ready to assist you anytime."
She projected her gentle voice through the magical orb. Through the orb, she could see the surroundings that Kane was in. It was essentially a building that had been mutilated by bullets, grenades and some smaller bombs. Large chunks of cement and metal were lying everywhere. In short, "ruins" would be a good word to describe the place.
"Kane, this is where the Recon never made past... You are needed to help scout below here..."
The pink orb hovered quickly and gracefully in front of Kane, then moving off to a rather obscure man-hole that was covered by large chunks of rubble, it stopped, hovering above it.
"You might want to brace yourself, we don't know what's going to be in there, or how high is the level of radiation going to be."
She warned Kane, not wanting anyone - being only Kane, to get hurt.
Hmm... I think he could use more than just one orb for help...
She considered for a moment, before summoning three more pink magical orbs, and sent them down to where the first one was already at.

Kane listened to the little girl's instructions, then the orb moved to reveal a pile of rubble.
"You need to go through here?"
Without further ado, Kane brought both fists forward in a straight double punch, shattering the rubble into dust, there, a small manhole was revealed.
A little small for me.
He bent down and put his hands on the rim of the manhole (OoC: heh, don't get any funny ideas), and ripped a hole large enough for him to jump in.
Yet another three pink orbs joined him as he hopped into the manhole.

Through her four "surveillance cameras" she saw Kane smashing the rubble and tearing at the manhole, to make it big enough for him to get in. The four orbs followed him and positioned themselves in front, back and both sides of Kane. With enough distance from him so as not to distract Kane or get in his way.
From her "eyes" the situation underground was not all that bad. The sewers were still in a rather good condition for a post-war zone. However, it seems that this city had a really chaotic underground plan. Even in the darkness, with only the four orbs emitting some light, there are multiple branches and paths in just ten meters around (radius), but not all were big enough for Kane to get through - it sure is easy to get lost in this place.
The remaining stagnant radioactive sewage watery sludge would be at knee height for average humans. Coming into contact with it for would bring about terrible mutations almost instantly, without proper anti-radioactive suits.
As Kane landed into the midst of the watery-sludge with a rather loud slash, ripples on the water surface and echos of his landing were sent and rang all throughout the sewage system.
"Be careful Kane..."
Her voice came from all four orbs as a slight whisper. At the same time, almost inaudible echoes of buzzing came from all around and the water stirred just so slightly.

The water was barely up to his ankles.
The radiation counter jumped again at this sector, but still it was not even halfway to the maximum.
Pink orbs floated about him, the little girl's voice emanated from them.
"Be careful Kane..."
The area was practically pitch black, but his enhanced hearing warned him of an ever so slight buzzing in the background.
Unsheathing his battle standard, he held it in a defensive stance, his helmet barely scraping the ceiling.
Taking one step forth, he switched on the floodlight mounted on his armor.

The watery-sludge made little splashing noises as Kane took a step forward. The floodlight illuminated about fifteen meters ahead of him, revealing a long passage down and more split paths that he could possibly take. Little rubble stood in his way.
However, the buzzing steadily got louder and became of such a great level combined with the echo that would normally force humans to plug their ears, or even become unable to concentrate.
Suddenly, from the shine of the floodlight, a swarm of flying creatures were speeding towards Kane. From the echos all around, it was certain that not just in front of Kane, but from every path possible to where Kane was, black swarms were charging to his position.
Lady in white[/u]
"Kane! Look out!"
Her voice rang from the four orbs once again. The black swarm was steadily getting larger and larger. From behind Kane, another black swarm seemed to be closing in too. On his left, there is only a wall blocking the way. On the right, there was a path, but too small for Kane to get through.
Oh no... This does not seem good at all! I sure hope this gets there in time...
She stretched out her left hand with her palm held open. Around her hand, six magical orbs appeared. They spun in circles around her hand and conjugated into a large single magical orb, the size of a football. It then zoomed down to the structure and made its way to the manhole.
Black swarm[/u]
"Bzzzzzztt!!!"
Their wings carried their bulky bodies as they made their way to the source of the noise. It had been a long while before they had a feast. Would this be a good one for them? Regardless, they just had to check this out.
Not before long, they spotted a bright light, with four smaller pink spheres around a huge figure.
FOOD!!!
Upon setting their eyes on Kane, they raced forward.

Kane could see them coming.
Large, fat flying bugs they were, sort of like the bugs they encountered during the second war, of course, this time just that they were flying, and Kane didn't have his chainsword.
It didn't matter, Kane was an expert in staves as well, with many, many hours spent practicing moves with the flagstaff.
He waited till they were about two meters from him.
Time for some pest control.
He spun the flagstaff, his huge fingers moving deftly just like a pianist's, causing the staff to become a whirling blur of silver, gold, and blue.
He glanced towards the hole he had made.
"Block the exit!", he yelled. "Don't let any of them escape!"
He focused his attention on the swarm again.
"Hear me! You heathens who dare to stand against the might of the Emperor! I shall spare none of you! Even if you send a thousand more, I will bring them, all, DOWN! In the name! Of the EMPEROR!"
His armor glowed softly as he completed his battlecry, the innate machine spirit responding, readying itself for combat.

The black swarm closed in quickly around Kane, from all around.
Lady in white
She had heard what Kane shouted out.
Indeed, she needed to block the manhole. Otherwise, these bugs would leave the sewers, and who knows what chaos they would bring to the surface of this planet. Once again, she readied herself to conjure up more magic. This time, she held up her staff.
The red orb glowed.
She stretched out her left hand in front of her. A dozen of pink magical spheres instantly appeared around her in a ring. She twisted her right wrist in a small circle and then pointed the staff down at the building. Immediately, the spheres moved in a circle around her and one by one, they sped down to the manhole. Six of them formed the edges of a hexagon, and magical lines extended from each other, connecting to all other five spheres. The lines multiplied and a magical net was formed. Preventing entry or exit by any physical object through the hole, until it was dispelled.
The football sized magical orb had split up back into six. They streaked amongst the black swarms and "detonated". Releasing enough magical energy to knock out quite a few bugs. However, this was rather negligible considering the huge swarm that was flooding to Kane.
The other six magical orbs did the same and only achieved the same results.
Unngh... Something better has to be done! But I can't use any strong magic... Or I'd probably make the hole even bigger!
She frowned upon her uselessness. However, she still refused to see Kane having to take on the whole swarm alone. Once again, she raised her staff. A ribbon like ring appeared around the head of her staff. More magical orbs were made, and they went down to the ruins and fused into rubble the around the size of footballs.
The rubble started to vibrate slightly and hovered a little off the ground.
Black swarm[/u]
They charged at Kane without a single thought or plan in mind, and without fail, most of them went "CLANK" against the spinning flagstaff. Their extremely hard exoskeleton protected them from any physical damage, however, most of them were knocked unconscious.
From behind Kane, some were knocked out cold by the magical pink orbs. But they could not care less. It was the food they wanted. The rest charged straight at him, sticking out their extremely sharp and hard proboscis, ready to try and impale through his exterior. However, they experienced some sort of wave forcing them to slow down. Their muscles stopped functioning properly, their tiny brain hidden by their humongous eyes and exoskeleton was losing its function. The heat from Kane's rage had killed them, pretty much like a moth attracted to an electrical lamp and getting itself cooked in a while.
The dead and unconscious landed into the watery-sludge with plops and splashes. The water engulfed them and sent them to their watery graves.
Nevertheless, more of the bugs came from other routes, some circled around Kane spitting their radioactive toxic saliva at him while others tried to attack him from all directions and simply ended up drowning.
The continuous bombardment by the bugs was beginning to cause the flagstaff to lose its momentum and its balance.
Black swarm bios[/i]
Essentially houseflies that have mutated due to the radiation. They have taken a form similar to their relative, horseflies and marchflies. Besides that, they have mutated to have a retractable proboscis that could easily penetrate metal. Their exoskeleton has also been mutated to be much harder than before. It is not as hard as metal, but it is un-squash-able with just hands or with a fly-swatter.
They about one to two times as large as a normal human's head. Their proboscis can reach up till around twelve centimeters in length. They basically feed on any living thing besides plants. Be it if the living thing is now dead, rotting or still alive. They have the ability to spit out radioactive toxic at their prey to incapacitate them slowly.

Kane had beaten down many of the creatures, perhaps even a hundred.
The flagstaff, ever spinning in his hands, had grown unbalanced. Kane stopped its spinning, clutching it tightly in one hand as the insects continued pouring in.
I must not risk further damaging my standard!
Still holding the flagstaff in one hand, he bellowed a War! cry, further intensifying the heat from his Rage!, and increasing his already formidable strength.
With only has massive, grasping hands for weapons, he began dodging as best as he could in the small, confined space, and at the same time, grabbing the bulbous creatures and smashing them flat on the wall.
"You think you can stand before me?! Although I am exiled from the Emperor's grace, I nevertheless still worship his name, and from there, I draw limitless strength! From where do you, mindless wretches, draw your strength?!"
He yelled as he repeatedly grabbed them and crushed them, smashed them, and stomped on them.
Death only truly comes when the Emperor allows it, and since I have received no such indication, I will fight on! For the Emperor!

Lady in white[/u]
She concentrated hard, her eyes were closed. She was casting her magic based on her emotions. Her staff was still glowing red and the pink ribbon with Mid-Childa words on it was still circulating around the head of the staff.
Many of the rubble on the ground had been infused with her magic. They glowed pink slightly and they hovered off the ground. With the same magical signature, they slipped through the magical net and lined themselves along the ceiling of the sewers, but not too near to Kane.
"Star... Dust... FAAALLLL!!!!"
The rubbled plummeted down into the watery sludge, knocking out even more flies. However, they stopped right at the surface of the water, barely touching it. They rose up again and started flying about, knocking down as many flies as she could with her magic.
Mutated Flies[/u]
They were undeterred by the flying rocks and kept charging straight to Kane, some manged to tackle into him head on with loud "CLANK"s and knocking themselves out cold. Some tried sticking their proboscis into Kane's armour, only to poke small little indents in his armour and get stuck. They buzzed angrily, but were unable to free themselves. But most were killed by the increasing heat wave even before they could get close to Kane. Those stuck onto him died, hanging by their proboscis off Kane's armour.
The rest were circling around Kane, still spitting their radioactive toxic at him. The level of radioactivity kept rising with the toxic piling up a little on Kane. Within the toxic, contained concentrated phosphoric acid and enzymes.
Enzymes were useless against Kane's metal armour, being a non-organic material. However, the acid was taking effect on the armour. Little sizzling sounds could be heard as traces of hydrogen left the surface of Kane's armour, it was being dissolved at a snail pace. But it would have been a torture to normal humans, burning off their skin and epidermal capillaries, revealing the pink flesh underneath besides the blood flowing out from the damaged capillaries.
From the pathway on Kane's right, more flies joined in the hunt.

The watery-sludge stirred. Ripples were coming from the front towards Kane. Little yellowish glows could be seen on the water surface in the distance.

The bodies piled up around him, creating a veritable meat shield which limited the number of bugs that could attack him at once.
Adrenaline and rage coursed through his veins, as inside his helmet, his eyes glowed red.
The pesky insects had caused some minor damage to his armor, this further infuriated him.
"YOU PATHETIC SCUM ARE UNWORTHY TO BE MY OPPONENT! DO YOU THINK THAT YOU CAN DEFEAT ME PURELY BY STRENGTH OF NUMBERS?! I HAVE FACED WARRIORS STRONGER THAN YOU, I HAVE FOUGHT THOUSANDS OF SKARRGE, AND SLAUGHTERED THEM ALL, I HAVE STOOD, VICTORIOUS, UPON MOUNTAINS OF THE BODIES OF MY ENEMIES! AND WHAT MAKES YOU THINK THAT YOU WILL NOT SUFFER THE SAME FATE?!"
The blood of the Primarch flows through me, and thus, so does the Emperor's. Though it is nought but a drop, it is far more than enough to defeat these worthless insects!
Unwavering in the face of countless enemies, their incessant buzzing and attempts to sting him drove him up to higher levels of madness.
"FOR THE EMPEROR! CHAAAARGE!"
Bursting through a wall of insectoid bodies, Kane rushed headlong into another swarm, once again using his flagstaff as a gigantic fan, spinning it infront of him to cut down insects as he moved.
"DEATH. TO ALL WHO OPPOSE US!"

Lady in white[/u]
She could see it clearly, Kane was very enraged. He was charging head on into the swarm, tearing it apart and "bulldozing" a hole through it. He looked somewhat like a way over-sized viral particle, with all the bugs sticking out from him like protein receptors.
Using her mind, her rocks continued to send the flies down into their underwater graves.
"This is just... Endless!"
Her voice laced with irritation rang through the four magical orbs again.
However, she noticed something else. The yellow glows on the water surface. They seemed to be getting larger and larger by the second.
"Kane... There's something else other than the flies coming at you..."
She readied more of her magic and sent them down to the manhole as rubble once again.
Mutated Flies[/u]
They were brutally pushed aside into the walls and dropping into the watery-sludge, by Kane's gigantic fan. Further spitting or trying to pierce at Kane was also useless, as there was not much space of Kane's armour revealed to land an attack on. They buzzed angrily around him, still refusing to let their prey get away this easily. Especially after taking down so many of their kind.
Even with their puny brains, they stopped all pathetic attacks at Kane, and they gathered into a single large swarm in front of Kane. The swarm was shaped like Kane. With a "head", "limbs" and all, at least until where the water surface was. They then flew at their fastest speed possible at him, nearing a hundred kilometers per hour.
Their intention was clear. They wanted to knock into Kane with such great force, such that he would fall.
-------------------
Mutated fly count: ~6500
-------------------
Yellow glows approaching[/u]
Initially, they inched towards the huge figure, wanting to see what he was up to. Slowly, they increase the pace. Moving steadily towards the huge figure, they could see the mutated flies buzzing all around Kane.
They decided that it was a good time to attack. They spread out and started moving in a pincer formation towards Kane.

Untiring. Unwavering. Unstoppable.
Kane had smashed, crushed, and obliterated countless of the insectoid vermin, and yet more would step in to replace the fallen.
As Kane battled on, the remaining swarm retreated.
Then they made a crude attempt to mimic his shape, before moving towards him headon at a terrifying speed.
Not terrifying enough to Kane, however.
"I have shown you the might of the Emperor, and yet you still dare to mock me, an instrument of He himself? I shall show you, once again, what a TRUE charge is made of!"
Once again, Kane bellowed a War! cry, and Charge!d into the mass headon, holding his flagstaff up and ready to cut the formation cleanly in half.

Lady in white
From her view, she saw Kane rushing at the swarm. They are both about to collide together, one with great speed, and the other with great inertia. She did not really dare to want to see the outcome.
But as a means of protection, she clenched her right fist, and the magical orbs fused into the rubble left them. They splashed into the water, while the orbs flew to Kane and lined themselves onto his armour. Forming what seemed like a magical barrier on an already almost impenetrable armour.
Let this help him out...
Mutated Flies[/u]
Zooming head on into Kane, they noticed that he suddenly started glowing a little pink. However, they did not know what it was, and neither did they give a damn. It was the food they want. That's that.
Upon contact with the magical barrier, their initial speed was cut by half, and upon contact with Kane himself, they all flew. Even without the help of their wings, they still flew. It was like a domino. The first layer of flies where knocked backwards and all around sideways, knocking the rest around them back too, and flying all about the place and rebounding off the walls like bouncing pin balls.
Their formation was shattered. None of them were still anywhere "alive". They were all either unconscious lying on the small dry areas or drowning in the watery sludge.
----------------------
Mutated fly count: ~0
----------------------
Yellow glows[/u]
They witnessed this monster smashing the formation of the mutated flies in a single charge. But that did not deter them at all. Instead, they carried on with their plan, slightly more organised than the flies.
Not before long, Kane was fully surrounded by the little yellow orb like glows on top of the water surface. The watery sludge was not translucent enough for him to see what was beneath the surface. But they could see him clearly...
They all seemed to be staring up at him.

The insectoid formation was thoroughly smashed into smithereens.
Kane took some time out to wipe the gore and slime off his flagstaff.
As he looked around, he took care to finish off any still twitching insects, crushing them with this boot heel and grinding them into the ground.
I owe my thanks to you, mighty Emperor.
A slight warmth grew within him, almost like as if the Emperor was acknowledging his thanks.
"Thank you for your assistance, Battle Sister."
He spoke to the pink orbs, he now considered the little lady a worthy ally and so termed her appropriately.
Worthy indeed of the Emperor's sanctioning.
With that, he also began plucking the dead insects out of his armor, making a mental note to acquire some appropriate materials after the mission to smoothen his armor surface.
A brainwave struck him.
Picking up a few superhard probiscuses, he proceeded to glue them onto his shoulderpads, the glue being non other than the blood and flesh of the insects.
A trophy of a hard-won battle.
