No dream had bothered her that night--of that, she was glad. The cheap convenience store alarm clock on the side desk buzzed weakly to signal the start of a new day. She flicked the alarm off and sat up, not sparing a single moment to shoo away the sleepiness that pulled at her lids. She did not feel safe in her room. The less time she spent there, the better.
The uniform was folded neatly on her chair, each article stacked in the order that it would be worn. Meticulous. For socks, she slipped on modest white knee-highs. Then slipped on the blouse, pulled up her skirt, and fitted the vest, which she had opted to wear over the jacket, over everything. She walked over to the bathroom while buttoning up and stared at her reflection.
A mixed European-Asian girl with messy black hair and green eyes stared back at her with a haunted gaze. Not very inviting. She'd have to fix that. She washed up and ran a comb through her hair.
"Good morning, I hope we have a good semester together," the girl in the mirror said with a warm smile. Perfect.
The girl in the mirror fixed her collar and patted some loose strands into place. As a final adjustment before she grabbed her bag, she loosened up her sleeves and rolled them below her elbow for a casual look. With that, the transformation was complete.
The girl from the mirror stepped into her shoes and into the hallway of the dormitory. She was early, but she didn't mind. It was always good to be early. She walked away from room 303, and from Kris Rosenfield.
